For readers

Navigation

In Resources, one can browse lists of creators (authors, directors, musicians, artists, editors, etc.), publishers, collections, keywords, or categories. Once you click on a member of one of these lists an alphabetized list of the references appears in MLA bibliography format. To look at individual article records in the current CSS you click on v (or V). This gives you a much more detailed view, allowing you to read the notes and abstract (and very importantly too to be able to access to a weblink. For many reference types this is not available in MLA bibliography style). I will try to improve the CSS for a web-based style that links all "newspaper articles", "magazine articles", "books", etc. where a link is available).

Once you select a single reference you can navigate among the individual article references from your last query using the previous and next buttons.

Collecting references for export

Imagine that you want to export some of the references here into Zotero, Refworks, or Endnote. You are certainly free to do so, though if you cite the abstracts or notes verbatim it is necessary to cite the author and provide a link to Creolist Biblioshare so that people who learn things from them hurry here forthwith to fill up our paypal piggy-bank with dozens of dimes.

For a simple export based on a keyword, you just select a keyword from Resources > Browse keywords and once you reach the MLA Bibliography style list you simply go to File > Export to... and chose the format you prefer (BibTex / RIS / Endnote). A file will be generated that you have an hour to download.

If you just want to export one article, you click the "add to basket" link in the individual article record view (see navigation above). If you want to continue browsing once you've done so, just carry on: you can keep adding articles to your basket. When you are ready to export your "basket", go to Resources > View Basket... and then (as above) File > Export to...

If you want to construct an elaborate search query you should find all the handles you require (users, keywords, reference types, creators, categories, as well as full-text search, etc., etc.) at Resources > Power Search. To select a field you must click on the checkbox underneath it. Basic AND/OR options are available for keyword searches. The Resources > Quick Search also is a powerful search tool, but it does not let you search by user/contributor. This is why I've mentioned "power search" first, since one of the most common types of query I can imagine is a contributor wanting to export only their own records.

But I've already strayed slightly into the realm of contributors so...

For contributors

Account creation

Account creation is not automatic. I need to be aware of your project and be persuaded that it fits with the goals of the larger Creolista site in order to create an account for you. Hint: I'm pretty focused on digital technologies, languages, linguistics, literatures, law, histories, decolonizations and anti-capitalistic rantings, as I think we all should be. ^^ These interests may evolve with time who knows.

Logon

Once your account has been created and you receive mail with your password, go to Wikindx > User logon and enter your password.

Change Password

If I can find your password in my mailbox, that's probably a sign that you should change it straightaway.

Enter a reference

Resources > New

  • leads to a page where you are prompted for the title of the document and the document type.
  • The decision concerning document type is important because the fields presented are significantly different.
  • Please feel free to explore different documents types, do not hesitate to make a "mistake" by trying out funky doc types.

Once you've decided on the doc type and have entered the title (and subtitle if applicable), the "proceed" button will land you on a page that asks you to enter the number of authors.

Don't worry, once you enter that number and hit "proceed" you get access to all the fields! Of particular note are the abstract and notes field.

  • I make an effort to summarize the article or at least mention a few notable details from the article in the abstract (or add a Table of Contents for books)
  • I sometimes add other relevant articles concerning closely related articles or juicy tangents in the notes field.
  • In short, if the reference is added it should ideally have either an abstract or notes. Why is it interesting?
Categories & Keywords

For me this is by far the most intriguing aspect, insofar as it permits making creative links between documents by being creative about ontologies. For the moment there are a limited number of categories, and they aren't overly creative yet:

  1. history
  2. law
  3. linguistics
  4. literature
  5. speaking to machines
  6. speaking through machines

Suggestions for new categories (especially creative meta-type categories) are very much welcomed. Categories can be considered like namespaces. It is best to add categories straightaway.

There are currently far too many keywords, which means that to avoid duplicates I sometimes wait to add keywords until later. Once the record is created, by going to Wikindx > Home and clicking on v to make the individual record appear, it is possible to edit keywords by clicking on (E) which makes the complete list of keywords appear all at once. A regular curating task is weeding out duplicate / redundant keywords, as even with only one user, they proliferate quite easily.
Finishing up

Please check that you have gotten all the data you can from the document before submitting. Dates are very important when browsing through a bibliography, and no bibliographic entry is complete without them. Once you press "proceed", you get a confirmation message and return to the initial "new reference" page, where you are asked to enter the doc title and type. In order to see your reference you can:

  • Wikindx > Home
your article will be the most recent one,
to view it click v
to edit click E
do not click X or your reference will eXplode (only admins can currently explode things)
  • Resources > Quick Search & Resources > Power Search.

Enter a quote or a comment

While quotes and comments (and even musings) can be entered into the notes field, it may be a more interesting practice to use the separate "quotes," "comments," and "musings" fields which only become available once the reference is published.

    • Since suggestions for keywords pop up as you type, this makes it easier to avoid reduplicating ever-so-slightly different keywords, which, is a dastardly source of (white) noise in any dataset
    • (references scattered between zonbi, zombie, & zombies make for less-than-ideal concept bibliographies).
    • it is not necessary to add keyword tags to attribute one's own bibliography because it is possible to search by username (all the way at the bottom of power search in the current interface).
