Pronoun, (singular)

  • this, or this one, is near the speaker.
  • that, or that one, is farther away.

The initial voiced dental fricative ð is a deictic common to both the singular and plural:

  • these (or in some dialects, these ones) are near the speaker.
  • those (or in some dialects, those ones) are farther away.

Demonstrative adjective (determiner)

  • This computer is the one I am using.
  • That computer is farther away.
  • Kids these days...
  • Back in those days...
