Walrus Cows and Yearlings on Ice

Noun

UK: jɪə(r), jɜː(r)
US: jɪr

365 days. (except in a leap year which has 366 days)

It's always embarrassing when mistaking "years" for "days" in conversation, but it happens (perhaps because of the similarity betwwen "jour" [ʒu:ʁ] and English year [jɜːr]). Related Greek hōra "year, season, any part of a year," also "any part of a day, hour;" is of no help at all in getting this sorted in anyone's head.

You just have to remember -di = day.

Derived words

  • yearly: annual
  • year-long: lasting for or throughout the year qui dure pendant une ou le long de l' année
  • yearling (1-year-old animal)
