Walrus Cows and Yearlings on Ice

Noun

UK: jɪə(r), jɜː(r) US: jɪr

365 days. (except in a leap year which has 366 days)

It's always embarrassing when one mistakes "years" for "days" in conversation, which is easy enough to do because of the similarity betwwen "jour" [ʒu:ʁ) and English year [jɜːr]. Related Greek hōra "year, season, any part of a year," also "any part of a day, hour;" is of no help in getting this straight. You just have to remember -di = day.
